- Our goals:
Continue
supporting and sponsoring events to provide the Filipino Community with an educational
link to their historical and contemporary existence in both the Philippines and the U.S.
Raise $10,000.00
for the establishment of a development fund at U-M for the long-term goal of a Philippine
Studies center and program.
Have $2 million
in the development fund to propose a professorship position at U-M in 2003, with the hopes
that this professorship will lead to the firm establishment of a program and center.
- How can you help?
Encourage your
Filipino community organizations to represent you at PSG meetings, where they can be
informed on developments and progress at U of M.
Urge your
Filipino community organization to come together and help raise the initial $10,000.00
"seed" money needed. The department of Asian Languages and Cultures will be
presenting a proposal to the U of M for a Philippine Expert professorial chair in 2003.
PSG is trying to ensure that the U of M will accept the proposal by raising $2 million for
a second professorial chair the same year. Two Philippine Experts added to the select few
experts on campus now will significantly increase the number of classes available to
students who wish to study the Philippines, and will allow for the necessary networking to
establish a permanent program. The PSG is making their identity prominent for the
decision-makers at U of M, but PSG is struggling to have their cause be heard. Once PSG
reaches their first goal of $10,000.00, a development fund can be established with U of M
for the purpose of holding the $2 million needed to "buy" a professorship
position for a Philippine Expert.
Let us embrace our culture. Let us all help in exploring and re-discovering it.
